Lattice energies and Born-Haber cycles?

Ok, i've been revising these and i find them impossible to get my head round :( for AS chemistry for edexcel, does anyone know if you need to be able to calculate things with them. I understand what the answers show and all that, i just can't actually do them so i'm wandering if i have to ?
