Question about sump pump.?

There is a big storm coming and my basement will flood. getting ready to go to bed right now. but there isnt any water in it yet. i turned the sump pump on. it isnt one that turns on when the water goes over it- it has to be going at all times. will this ruin the sump pump to be pumping with no water in there?? or is it dangerous?
