What is this insect/worm that i found???!!!!!?

one day my back yard was flooded with water so i decided to play around a bit. i went to the very back where it wasnt so wet and saw the end of some kind of worm. it was white and it was in a little hole on the ground and the end of its body was sticking out. the worm looking thing wasnt skinny. it was fat and maybe almost an inch thick. it was white and i poked it gently and it moved a bit closer into its hole. i left to tell my brother and when i came back for it, it was gone. i dug holes and still couldnt find it. WHAT WAS IT? ):
