My iPod doesn't cooperate with headphones?

No matter what set of headphones I plug into my iPod, the sound defers to only one ear bud. And it happens to every headphone I've tried - my sister's headphones work fine on her iPod, but on mine the problem persists. I think it's a problem with the iPod itself - is there any way I can fix it myself? I really appreciate any help, thanks
